Distance and Displacement

Motion in a plane requires a two-dimensional change in position. So this motion makes a displacement that is a combination of the horizontal and vertical displacements.

The displacement in the figure below is expressed as a combination of x and y coordinates. If each tile is considered as one step in the x-direction is denoted as i and one step in the y-direction is denoted j. The displacement of each of the three points started from the origin, and are expressed as in the figure.
